Twin Caverns by Simanion Twin Caverns by Simanion
Acrylic and watercolour on canvas.

This painting was done for my younger brother's new electronic duo, Twin Caverns, to be used wherever they like. Their music is pretty chilled, down tempo, ethereal electronic stuff with haunting, floating vocals by Louise Millar combined with more gritty hip hop beats. Some kind of mix between Massive Attack, London Grammar (especially in guitar sound), Chet Faker and a touch of soul. Anyway, I wanted the painting to reflect their music in being dreamy, flowing and simple in form, but heavily textured and peppered with electronic detail. I think they were pretty happy with it :)

I really love this kind of abstract painting. Building a world  out of flowing lines and broad areas of colour and then clarifying parts with detail and contrast. I don't do it that often, but it may pop up more now, at increasingly larger sizes.

If it sounds like your thing and you wanted to check out Twin Caverns, I thoroughly recommend you do! Only a few songs up so far with more coming soon. Here are some links:

The shapes of this piece are really the most interesting aspect to me; not to say the color isn't important, but the color would provide very little if it weren't used to create the contrast of the almost moldy/waxy, gravity-defying flow of the various pseudopod-like structures. These unfamiliar shapes and patterns (more accurately, difficult to describe using one simple real life comparison) seem to help ebb and sway the viewer in and out of an otherworldly ether; I myself see what could be an incomprehensible life form on an asteroid or moon so far and isolated from even its parent star that the lights of the universe step aside to the ghostly glow.

Your choice of almost exclusively cool colors is appropriate to the shapes, I think. It doesn't rule out the possibility of flames but helps lead the mind into other, less obvious directions; subtle, almost contradicting hues splashed carefully about add to the feel further.

From what I can tell in the description, it sounds as though you ended up with near exactly what you meant to portray. I understand that often this style of art is meant to defy some elements of other more realistic styles, but in recognizing that still, it's difficult to find a strong focal point. Given the type of music this was made to visually simulate, I can see how it would of little importance to the band, but its ambiguity does come with the price that it leaves a good deal to be desired from the eyes of most people browsing through music. It's all quite visually interesting but maybe a bit uniformly certain point that really draws everything together into one strong emotional surge. Relating to a larger number of people may not be your goal with this piece either (the whole of the project to me sounds as though it is more progressive and concerned of artistic integrity than the volume of casual listeners) but that may be sometime to consider if you are also well concerned with drawing in a little more attention. The colors and shapes are shocking and draw interest, definitely, but it might help to have a little more of a hook once the eye is caught.

wonderful! I totally love the minimalism of colors, the cool palette and the contrast between dark part and blue part. though it's abstract, it still speaks to the imagination of viewer. it looks like a fantasy castle in some icy realm :)

When I first seen this it made me think of an ice palace in the style of Amano.  The colors are very vibrant.  :)
