"It Was The Moon That Stole My Slumber"

Third typography poster for uni. This one illustrates the type for an extract of lyrics from the Silverchair song "Across the Night".

The line is about being unable to sleep because of the arresting luminosity and power of the moon, and the song in general is about falling in love with the night and the escapism and freedom it provides, but also the associated frustration that comes with insomnia. The song's elaborately orchestrated, and in a way that harks back to a bygone era.

So I tried to encapsulate all this imagery in my illustration. I took inspiration from the video

see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoL5Q7…

which has an old silent-era film look, with flickers and areas of obvious brightness and contrast, and I looked specifically at George Milies' "A Trip to the Moon" (the one where the rocket lands in the moon's eye, brutal lol).

Hope you like!

Thanks, I;m glad to hear it! I just think it's such a cool challenge to work in this way. They either hit the mark or they don't.

It's brill, dude! And it really captures the olde-timey charm you were going for. What medium did you use- scratchboard?

Thankyou! It seems to show up better on the screen than when printed unfortunately.. Well it's fortunate for you, lol. I actually drew it in pen on A4, then inverted it and (kind of) perfected the spacing digitally.

I know, how good is it.. I just found these headphones that for some reason screw up, but what thy do is provide a completely different mix of whatever song you're listening to, almost like selective backing tracks! It's amazing listening to this song, you hear all these harps and vocal harmonies and various flutey things that you had no idea existed. Glad you like the poster too, lol.

i love listening to the same song on different machines to get the full idea of what is going on. as you say some times there are hidden tracks etc. i listened to one of my favourite songs "god is in the radio" by queens of the stone age up very loud and reversed and stumbled upon a message from 'satan' saying hes behind my left shoulder =P

Haha, I actually had the gradshow exhibition the other day..poster were up on foamcore.. but the highlight for me was the little Manion cutouts that I provided, with random messages on the back. People were visibly confused and that's kind of what I live for.
