It Was The Moon... by Simanion It Was The Moon... by Simanion
"It Was The Moon That Stole My Slumber"

Third typography poster for uni. This one illustrates the type for an extract of lyrics from the Silverchair song "Across the Night".

The line is about being unable to sleep because of the arresting luminosity and power of the moon, and the song in general is about falling in love with the night and the escapism and freedom it provides, but also the associated frustration that comes with insomnia. The song's elaborately orchestrated, and in a way that harks back to a bygone era.

So I tried to encapsulate all this imagery in my illustration. I took inspiration from the video

see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoL5Q7…

which has an old silent-era film look, with flickers and areas of obvious brightness and contrast, and I looked specifically at George Milies' "A Trip to the Moon" (the one where the rocket lands in the moon's eye, brutal lol).

Hope you like!

Haha, well hoon could fit too I guess :XD: Damn hoons keeping me up at night, with their drunk and disorderly conduct and their vociferous loitering. I've heard of Sgraffito but I don't really know what it is..is it to do with ceramics? Either way this was done i pen on paper and then inverted in PS :aww:

Ah, so inverting it gave it that removed material look.

Sgraffito is coating something in two or more layers of opaque paint or slip, then scraping off layers to reveal a different colour below.

I never would have thought of taking the negative of the image to give this effect, worth remembering.

That's wonderful! I love the symmetry and the smokey details in the background.

Is this scratchboard?

Thanks! Isn't symmetry grand sometimes, haha. It's actually a pen drawing that I inverted in Photoshop :)

Wow great work. It's rare to see such beautiful and accurate typographical work. Congratulations on the DD. You deserve it. The only thing i'd have to comment on is the readability of the word 'Moon' but I think thats probably down to the intention of creating the illusion of symmetry. Great work either way :+fav:

Thankyou! Haha, yes it was all about the symmetry, but in hindsight I probably should have made the right side of the M and lefts die of the N (which merge into the Os)a bit thicker, to define them more. Thanks for your wonderful comment :aww:

Thankyou! Well I drew it in pen on paper, then threw it in PS and inverted it, added textures etc. Alot of the detail of the original drawing is kind of lost, but it probably makes up for it in atmosphere I think.
