Drop The Shadow by Simanion Drop The Shadow by Simanion
This was #3 of three posters I produced for a recent exhibition I was involved in called "DROPSHADOW: An Exploration of Design Taboo"

Here be the tumblr: dropshadow2011.tumblr.com/

Dropshadow refers specifically to the somewhat automated digital tool/effect, which has a traditionally bad reputation amongst the design community. Works featuring the effect often overuse it, or rely entirely upon it to create depth, and it more often than not comes off looking really tacky and fake. We were taught to pretty much never use it.

With this show, we wanted to showcase the potential positives of the Dropshadow effect, the argument being that when used creatively, or in the right context, it can be an effective aesthetic element.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Illustrative type - my other lover. So this was an experiment and a half, haha. Somewhere along the line I went from being really legible to....not, lol. Pushing the letters into increasingly abstract territory, which is always fun. It became more of a unified composition, but I still put little hints in that it was type - including the obvious 'S', and the white lines that highlighted the letterforms.

More cryptically, I joined all the letters of each word so that you could follow them in sequence.

It's still pretty hard to read (easy for some I found, but they're used to seeing this kind of stuff), and I think it involves the viewer staying with the work for a while to work it out. If they want to. But otherwise, it just functions as an illustration, that still works conceptually. I noticed some of the shapes resembled monocles, and so threw a couple of top hats in for good measure haha. I wanted this one to be playful, and have some personality, after the other two posters which were pretty straightforward.

"Drop the shadow" is a play on words; a reference to the two opposing reactions that the dropshadow effect can elicit. As students we were encouraged to indiscriminately "drop" any use of dropshadow from our designs if we'd applied it, and it is still a cringe-worthy effect at times. On the other hand, this poster encourages you to just go ahead and drop the shadow anyway, lol. If you know what you're doing.

Anyway that's more than enough talking! Hope you enjoy :D

I love drop shadow - I use GIMP though so I suppose I look at it from a different angle. I like experimenting with drop shadow colours and angles.

You're right! That's what kinda gave me the inspiration to pull the top hats out of nowhere. Even the composition looks like a 1920's-ish tower. Totally unintentional but there you go!

Haha, oh you. You should totally meet bacchus, he's one hell of a guy. Small doses though. And all the jazz! My god, the jazz... I ..um.. grant you god-like status! But only on weekends and wednesday from 2:30pm until you have dinner.

But what if I only have a late lunch at 2:00pm!? :ohnoes:

Is it like a lottery rollover where I just get to be uber god-like next time? *takes out diary* and would that be the coming weekend, or the following wednesday? :faint:

Cryptic abstract, love the use of yin yang and the lines joining the letters make it easy to read.
Ironically though o from drop has compleatly eluded my eyes :?

Excellent abstract anyhow. :)

You know I only just realised they were yin yangs...haha. I mean, that's exactly what they are - minus the dots - but I just saw them as....shapes. How odd  Do you mean you can't locate the 'o' ? ..Have you found it yet?!

:wow: really odd even though I realized the yin and yangs but didnt realize that the dot were missing.
Still though I can make out the d,r & p of Drop but still cant figure out the o.

Haha, that's really interesting actually! Well the o in drop is the yin yang-esque circle up there. So you go down for the r and then back up to the o and down again to the p in a zig-zag. The Os have a little lick on them, maybe that's what was confusing? Also the fact that it also was made to look like a little man with a hat standing up there might not have helped, lol.

Ya now its seems very clear and whats funny is that it was always in front of my eyes and i could'nt spot it,but thats the thrill and beauty of abstract art there is always something hidden from your eyes.:)
