Advice From A Caterpillar by Simanion Advice From A Caterpillar by Simanion
Medium: Watercolour
Size: A3

This is a book illustration that would equally function as the chapter title for Chapter V in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland": Advice From A Caterpillar. All those words are in there, and it is a more experimental approach to type, heavily embedding it in the illustration so that it's at times almost hidden.

Thought I'd put a more psychedelic spin on the classic surrealism of the original and very well-known imagery. I may one day add a background, but in the context of a book illustration I thought it benefited from not having one.

Hope you like it :D

If you had ilustrated Alice in Wonderland, I suppose Lewis Carrol would be veeeery satisfied :)
I like that book and idea a lot, and your picture completely matches it. Those details like text, and colours, I totally love it!

Oh, this is gorgeous! I don't think you need a background! All the tiny details, flourishes and textures on everything contrast so well with the stark white I think it'd be a shame to lose their impact.

I'm a huge fan of Alice, and so it seems of your work too because this is at least the 4th or 5th piece i have stumbled upon and been instantly smitten with. In fact, Sugar High was my phone wallpaper for ages, because i loved the vibrancy of it.

Especially love the smoke and the caterpillar's back by the way :)

Oh my goodness. I love the colors. And your stylized version of the caterpillar.
The way you incorporate the words into the painting is spectacular. It makes us follow the image downward like a story page... At the end we notice little Alice standing there patiently. Amazing, very impressive

Thankyou! :thanks: I love that you experienced it this way :aww: I mean, there's no right or wrong way, but this was how I imagined it would be "read", finishing with the little Alice that may not have been visible at first.

After taking 2D Foundations I always try to pay attention to the composition and flow of my drawings. ^^ I'm glad I took the class. I probably wouldn't have realized that trick without it!

i love this style and i think it looks great without a background! the colours are blended beautifully and i didnt see the words besides advice at first but when i saw the others it was a delight and added a more facinating element to the illustration!

i think i went insane for a moment when i last looked, yes they are there and god i love all your art. and as soon as i saw you are from sydney i had a choir of children wearing white shirts running and singing that song from qantas in my brain. the fact you are australian makes me love your art more than original capacity.

Yeah pretty much, lol. Also I realised I could just use them however I wanted to, not just how they say you should use them ie. with lots of water and lightly applied.

lol ya, i did a watercolour painting at school once and used more colour than water, my teacher told me that i was suppose to use the paint lightly on a lot of water, she told me it wasnt the proper way to do watercolour painting
